Herbs and Vegetables in Containers

I guess I already made it clear here that my favourite store in Burlington Ontario is the Centro Garden store. I joined a workshop there this past week about herbs and vegetables in containers and oh it was a delight. The environment is very informal, there is wine and cheese to welcome you, the speaker was lovely sharing with us good tips and tricks to plant your favourite herbs and vegetables in containers. It was great for me as we live in a condo and don’t have much space, but as you know we love to cook, so fresh herbs and vegetables make all the difference in a dish.
If you are in the area, I really recommend checking their upcoming workshops.

So here is a taste of the store patio for you:

I couldn’t stop looking at the basil. It is so perfect it looks like a painting.

Wine was served in their super cute italian vino glasses:

And… this is the vase I chose to plant and brought home. Now we have fresh Sage, Basil and Rosemary. Isn’t it gorgeous?

Obiká Restaurant Toronto

We love cheese! We love Mozzarella di Bufala a lot! Can you imagine Mussarela di Bufala DOP? Which means… the mozzarella follows certain rules and meets particular standards and the result is an amazing delicious soft and light and creamy cheese.

To try this yummy cheese we went to the restaurant Obiká, in Toronto, and we were not disappointed. The food was perfect and the service was unbelievable. Maybe we got a little lucky that there was nobody else there, the waiter was so nice, we had great conversations, he ended up bringing a bigger dessert portion and a super fresh pesto for us to try, so it was great. (We went back there this weekend and it was not the same customer service experience, but it was good too. Maybe just not great.)

Well, let’s get on with the pictures. Let’s start with the Mozzarella di Bufala Tasting Plate. You can try the three different types of mozzarella they have. It’s great. I won’t order it every time we go there, but it’s worthy to try once. My favourite is definitely the Burrata, the creamy one in the picture below:

I had this homemade pasta with this absolutely delicious tomato sauce – Schiaffoni di Gragnano.

Husband ordered the basic Pomodoro pizza (he always orders this when it’s the first time he goes to an Italian restaurant. It’s his point of reference) and he was not disappointed:

Then the unforgettable Torta di Ricota for dessert. Important: this ricota is made from the Mozzarella di Bufala and it’s absolutely delicious!

With this perfect Espresso…

And after we couldn’t barely breathe, Giovanni – the waiter, brought us this fresh and delicious pesto to try (but here, I have to give my husband some credit, his pesto is much better…)

Great experience. Great food. Great price ($130 without tips and we had two glasses of wine on top of everything else). So definitely, worth a visit.

Homemade ravioli. Yummm…

We were a bit late on celebrating Malbec’s day!
Yes, Malbec, the grape used to make wine.
Of course it’s just an excuse to open a fancier bottle and make a special dinner…
Husband made homemade ravioli from scratch, with a delicious slow cooker beef tenderloin (in wine) and a buttery-sage sauce.  I’m trying to become a vegetarian, but it’s just not possible with this dish…
And the wine… We had the delicious Argentinian 2010 Achaval Ferrer Malbec. Gorgeous!

More from the weekend

You may have already noticed that food is a very important and relevant subject in my life (an my husband’s, thank God!).
We had friends coming over this weekend, and it’s just a good excuse to cook, cook and cook some more…

Chinese Restaurant – Pearl Harbour Front

I put a lot of thought if I should post this or not.
But well… it has everything to do with ‘tables’, and what wows me may not wow you, and vice-versa, right? So, I thought I should share the experience…

Last year, husband was crazy to go to a Chinese restaurant and “experience” a Dim Sum.
Coincidentally, on that same month I received a Groupon email for the Pearl Harbour Front Chinese Restaurant in Toronto, and we could finally go this past weekend.

Funny thing is that right after I purchased the Groupon, we read a Detox book and changed our diet quite much, and as you may know, Chinese food is not really what you can call ‘healthy’. But… we thought money is not something to be wasted, and after promising we would try to be ‘as healthy as possible’, off we went.

Well, I thought it was quite challenging to try to be healthy there: or the food is fried, or it has a very weird look. But if you like fried food, that would be the perfect place for you to go. I don’t, and I am a very visual oriented person especially when it comes to food, so food with a jello or slimy look, doesn’t really open my appetite.

The view, though, is amazing, but not enough to make me go back.

I guess Chinese food is just not my type of food…

Ossau-Iraty (Excuse me?)

Well, this is another post not really about table setting, but it has everything to do with

Ossau-Iraty

table, I promise. If you have been trying to find new cheeses options like I do (not cow cheese) I recommend you trying the French Ossau-Iraty sheep cheese.
It’s absolutely delicious. It’s hard, but  melts easily in your month. The taste is strong and the moment I put it in my month, my mouth waters. The smell is very neutral, doesn’t really have an impact. Very well-balanced cheese that gets even better with a strong white wine. You can find it at Whole Foods.
