Husband and I had dinner at Alex Restaurant, in Burlington ON.
I visited their website before and didn’t get super excited as there are not many vegetarian options, but I wanted to try it anyway. Maybe I got too distracted with this fact and didn’t pay attention to the ‘Small Plate Fine Dinning’ tab that is right on the home page. So at first, I got a bit disappointed because the portions are small and the price is not… But you know what? We don’t need more than that. And being a big advocate of the idea that ‘more’ doesn’t mean better, specially when it comes to food, I left the restaurant feeling pretty good about the sizes of the portions.

I usually don’t go for a starter because I’m a sweet tooth and I always want to try a dessert, and no regrets at all here. But let’s start with the beginning. I had a House made Gluten-Free Gnocchi with Sea Scallops, Roast Tomato Ancho Sauce and Spinach Pesto ($16), which was good, but I have to admit that no gnocchi is better than my grandma’s. The scallops were amazing though…

Husband had Braised Short Ribs with Wild Mushroom Lasagna and House Crisps. He liked it a lot, but wasn’t crazy about it. “Very crispy chips”, he said.

Perfect desserts! Not too bitter not too sweet amazing lime pie and a chocolate cake with home made marshmallow that I had no idea marshmallow could be this good!

Oh, I was almost forgetting to mention that the service was very nice. The young woman who served us was calm, and attentive.

We’ll go back.

Herbs and Vegetables in Containers

I guess I already made it clear here that my favourite store in Burlington Ontario is the Centro Garden store. I joined a workshop there this past week about herbs and vegetables in containers and oh it was a delight. The environment is very informal, there is wine and cheese to welcome you, the speaker was lovely sharing with us good tips and tricks to plant your favourite herbs and vegetables in containers. It was great for me as we live in a condo and don’t have much space, but as you know we love to cook, so fresh herbs and vegetables make all the difference in a dish.
If you are in the area, I really recommend checking their upcoming workshops.

We love cheese! We love Mozzarella di Bufala a lot! Can you imagine Mussarela di Bufala DOP? Which means… the mozzarella follows certain rules and meets particular standards and the result is an amazing delicious soft and light and creamy cheese.

To try this yummy cheese we went to the restaurant Obiká, in Toronto, and we were not disappointed. The food was perfect and the service was unbelievable. Maybe we got a little lucky that there was nobody else there, the waiter was so nice, we had great conversations, he ended up bringing a bigger dessert portion and a super fresh pesto for us to try, so it was great. (We went back there this weekend and it was not the same customer service experience, but it was good too. Maybe just not great.)

Well, let’s get on with the pictures. Let’s start with the Mozzarella di Bufala Tasting Plate. You can try the three different types of mozzarella they have. It’s great. I won’t order it every time we go there, but it’s worthy to try once. My favourite is definitely the Burrata, the creamy one in the picture below:

I had this homemade pasta with this absolutely delicious tomato sauce – Schiaffoni di Gragnano.

Husband ordered the basic Pomodoro pizza (he always orders this when it’s the first time he goes to an Italian restaurant. It’s his point of reference) and he was not disappointed:

Then the unforgettable Torta di Ricota for dessert. Important: this ricota is made from the Mozzarella di Bufala and it’s absolutely delicious!

And after we couldn’t barely breathe, Giovanni – the waiter, brought us this fresh and delicious pesto to try (but here, I have to give my husband some credit, his pesto is much better…)

Great experience. Great food. Great price ($130 without tips and we had two glasses of wine on top of everything else). So definitely, worth a visit.
